The Toronto Film Critics Association has named two movies as the best of 2009. The association was split between Hunger, about IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, and Quentin Tarantino's Second World War movie Inglourious Basterds. The lone runner-up was Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker; Bigelow was named best director.
The two first-place films picked up three more awards from the critics' group. Christoph Waltz was named best supporting actor for his role as a Nazi colonel in Basterds; Hunger, directed by Steve Mc-Queen, was named best first feature; and Basterds shared best screenplay with Up in the Air in a second tie.

Sony Pictures and producer Scott Rudin in talks to make Stieg Larsson's Millennium Series
It was only a matter of time before Hollywood scooped up the rights to Stieg Larsson’s best-selling trio of crime thrillers, including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire; and the yet-to-be-released The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest. Sony and producer Scott Rudin announced today that they are in final discussions to option the series that has become a worldwide cultural phenomenon. (Anne Thompson first broke the news here.)
The studio and its producer intend to produce all three films and will make them with the Swedish production company Yellow Bird Films. (The Swedish company has already produced and released a film based on the first book, titled in most of Europe Men Who Hate Women, which was a box-office hit to the tune of $100 million. That foreign-language version will be released by Music Box here in the U.S. in March.) The novels center on Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist, and Lisbeth Salander, a bi-sexual, emotionally disturbed computer hacker with a photographic memory, who have come together through unlikely circumstances to investigate various crimes. Larsson, a Swedish journalist and political activist not unlike his protagonist Blomkvist, died before any of his books were published and his estate has been embroiled in its own legal battles between Larsson’s long-term girlfriend and his family members. You can find a detailed account of the family drama in an LA Times article here.
It will be interesting to see who they cast as Salandar, a choice role for many up-and-coming actresses. Both Kristen Stewart and Ellen Page could do great things with the part. Who do you think should play this fascinating character?

Wicked Tony Award winner Idina Menzel will fly into the Golden Globe-nominated series "Glee," the Associated Press reports.
Menzel will appear in the new episodes of "Glee," which are set to begin airing in April 2010. "OK, listen. We had Kristin [Chenoweth] now Idina's coming," cast member Chris Colfer told the AP. "I can't even fathom that. I can't even talk about it. I am so, so excited."
As previously reported, Menzel has been in talks to portray the coach of McKinley High's rival glee club Vocal Adrenaline. The Wicked and Rent star will likely appear in all nine of the upcoming episodes. Tony Award nominee Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening) has also been confirmed to portray the lead member of Vocal Adrenaline in the 2010 episodes of "Glee."
"Glee" creator Ryan Murphy is also working on an all-Madonna episode of the series for 2010.
Menzel earned a Tony Award for her performance as Elphaba in the Stephen Schwartz musical Wicked. She was Tony nominated for her Broadway debut in Rent and has also appeared in Aida, The Wild Party, Summer of '42 and See What I Wanna See. Her film credits include "Summer of Sam," "Still a Kiss," "Kissing Jessica Stein," "Tollbooth" and "Water."

This was just announced on MSNBC, the cable channel, but it's also being posted now on various online news sites.
Roy E. Disney, nephew of the famous animator Walt Disney, has died at the age of 79.

Roy Disney at a screening of Salvador Dali's "Destino."

Just wanted to say "thanks" to Roy for trying to keep the banner of hand-drawn 2D animation flying at Disney Co. and for leading the charge to get Michael Eisner booted out. Thanks also for getting Dali's short film Destino produced (and without Eisner knowing).
I will update this post when a detailed obituary appears, but right now you can go read Roy's wiki page.

If you thought Adam Lambert's and Chris Brown's cover artwork masterpieces were spectacular, then feast your eyes on this watershed moment in the history of album art! Spencer Pratt has released upon the world, via Twitter, the cover for his new CD, I'm A Celebrity.
We really love the way in which the imagery reinforces Spencer's assertion that he is, in fact, a celebrity. Because if you didn't believe him, there he is: Towering over Hollywood, holding lots of money, looking all shiny. Looks like case closed on another episode of CSI: Celebrity.

I don't think anyone cares about him anymore... but that cover is too good not to post.

The geek-chic Youth In Revolt star shares his deathbed confessions.
What's your last meal?

This is a dedicated performer worthy of a career standing ovation and someone who appreciates both his past and the potential for the future. Speaking of which, all during his five-week stint here in the Windy City, he's been commuting back to Los Angeles each week while filming an episode of the cable FX network's series "Rescue Me" co-starring his pal Denis Leary. And on Friday, he begins filming in the new movie "Burlesque" by Screen Gems Studio and co-starring Cher, Christina Aguilera, Eric Dane, Alan Cumming and Kristen Bell.

Thugs and Dignitaries Sought For Burke and Hare Feature Film

Thugs, footmen, dignitaries, doctors, and ladies of the night are being sought for a new comedy feature film about Edinburgh's famous grave-robbers-turned-murderers Burke and Hare. Universal Extras are holding auditions for the parts at the Tolbooth in Stirling on Thursday 17th December from 9am to 5pm (people can turn up any time on the day according to the announcement).
It is an exciting project considering that the film is being made by John Landis, the director behind comedy classics such as the Blues Brothers, Trading Places, An American Werewolf in London, and Animal House.
Among the stars lined up are Simon Pegg as William Burke, Bill Nighy, Dan Aykroyd, Minnie Driver and John Cleese.
Set in 19th Century Edinburgh, the black comedy follows the two miscreants as they get into the grave-robbery business after discovering a body in their house and realizing that fresh corpses can yield a pretty penny when delivered promptly to Edinburgh's pioneering medical school.
When the two start cutting corners, killing to order instead of digging up stiffs from the graveyard like other "resurrectionists", they soon attract the attentions of the authorities.
With the law closing in, Hare persuades Burke that they should raise a last bit of cash to go straight and open a funeral parlour.
The open call for extras on the Universal Extras bulletin board states:
"Parts available in this truly full of laughter feature film will include you playing role(s) such as; Thugs, Students, Pub goers, Footmen, Dignitaries, Doctors, Market sellers, Ladies of the Night and many more! Payment per filming day will be around £80. The role you are selected for will determine what you will be paid and the amount of days you will be required for over February and March 2010."

If I lived in Stirling, I would be at the front of the line to be a Lady of the Night.

Have you seen James Cameron's new bajillion-dollar film Avatar yet? We have not! Probably because today is the film's official release date, and we were not invited to a screening. But that won't stop us from weighing in on a grassroots effort to boycott the film because it offends … transgender people.
We're still trying to figure out how the movie is demeaning to transgender folks. Or people who believe in evolution. Or something. But take it away, Internet conspiracy theorists! According to Stop Avatar Movie:
Why stop the Avatar movie?
In short, Avatar has hetrosexual themes, that's why. Not that hetrosexual themes are anything new in American films but when you consider the context in which the Avatar story is set, the message of this film is highly irresponsible.
Here's a summary of what is wrong with the Avatar film:
And that, uh, THIS IS A MOVIE?
On Friday, there will be a small protest effort, which the website promises "thousands" of people will be taking part in. You know, because of all the ridiculous gender norms Cameron employs:
All protests will be peaceful and non-confrontational. Suggested methods of protest:
Why not a lesbian?

Consider this: Suppose Neytiri is a lesbian or maybe she is bi-sexual. Would Jake not then be guilty of imposing his sexual beliefs upon Neytiri? Suppose Neytiri's culture encouraged gay, bi-sexual or transgender values? Jake would then be guilty of cultural interposition and dissipation.
UM, WHAT?! hetrosexual?

Here's a summary of what is wrong with the Avatar film:
1) Avatar assumes that the hetrosexual, "male" and "female" attraction will still be the primary relationship basis in the future.
2) Avatar ignores the fact of Evolution. Humans are evolving to be being Transgender, NOT hetrosexual.
3) Avatar also assumes that intelligent beings on other worlds would be hetrosexual.
In addition, the film uses militaristic themes and promotes violence as a means of story-telling and social context.
Are we the only ones who believe that, even by 2154, the year the movie is set, heterosexuality will still be the norm among humans? And that there will be more "strict" biologically male and female humans than transgender humans? And that, uh, nobody freakin' knows what sort of life forms exist beyond our solar system.2) Avatar ignores the fact of Evolution. Humans are evolving to be being Transgender, NOT hetrosexual.
3) Avatar also assumes that intelligent beings on other worlds would be hetrosexual.
In addition, the film uses militaristic themes and promotes violence as a means of story-telling and social context.
And that, uh, THIS IS A MOVIE?
On Friday, there will be a small protest effort, which the website promises "thousands" of people will be taking part in. You know, because of all the ridiculous gender norms Cameron employs:
One has to wonder about the thought process involved in the making of Avatar. Who decided that the Jake Sully character in Avatar had be "hetrosexual" or "straight"? And why have him engaged in a hetro-type relation with someone from another world? Was there anyone who pointed out that this film was taking place in the FUTURE and it would be more likely, given current evolutionary trends that Jake would be gay, bi or transgender? But the bigger point this whole protest misses? There is a human being having a sexual relationship with a space alien! Isn't that a better reason to get upset? 'Cause, like, ews-ville.
The film also makes a gross assumption that the old hetrosexual ways on Earth would somehow be occurring with another race of being on a totally different world with its own unique culture.
All protests will be peaceful and non-confrontational. Suggested methods of protest:
- Stand outside of theaters with signs and pamphlets to express your views
- Sit down in theater lobbies and do not move unless the police use force or violence upon you
- Stand up during a viewing of Avatar and remain standing
- Buy tickets to Avatar in bulk but do not attend showings. An empty theater sends a message
- Bring your mate to the theater and show affection to each other.
